Description

For one year, starting at the end of April 1964, and going on through to mid-October of the following year, Liberty City was the site of a World Fair dedicated to the achievements of Mankind with special emphasis on the city itself. Among the items that were constructed especially for the expo was a twelve-story high globe of the Earth (the Unisphere), an immense 'tent' (the six million dollar open-air pavilion called the "Tent of Tomorrow.") designed by the modernist architect Philip Johnson and a couple of observation towers which took on the form of stylized flying saucers.

Although now in disrepair and with much of its original paintwork ruined, the towers are no longer accessible by the public - although this does not stop juveniles climbing from time to time in order to complete dares or simply to makeout.
